A major international controversy has erupted after activists detained during a Gaza-bound aid flotilla accused Israeli authorities of severe abuse, including beatings, torture, and sexual assault, during their custody following the interception of their ships in international waters.
The activists, who were part of the “Global Sumud Flotilla” mission carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, alleged that Israeli forces detained hundreds of volunteers and subjected many of them to violent treatment aboard makeshift prison ships and detention facilities. According to organisers, several activists suffered broken ribs, taser injuries, and psychological trauma, while at least 15 individuals reportedly described incidents of sexual assault and humiliation.
One of the most shocking allegations claimed that detainees were locked inside dark shipping containers surrounded by barbed wire, where some were allegedly beaten repeatedly and denied proper rest, water, and medical care. Activists from multiple countries, including France, Spain, Germany, and Italy, have now spoken publicly about their experiences after being released.
Israeli prison authorities have strongly denied all accusations, calling them “false and without factual basis.” Officials stated that all detainees were treated according to legal procedures and received proper medical attention under professional supervision.
However, the allegations are now drawing serious international attention. The United Nations expressed concern over the reports, while legal authorities in Italy have reportedly opened investigations into possible crimes including kidnapping, torture, and sexual assault. Germany also acknowledged that some of its citizens returned with injuries and described certain allegations as “serious.”
The controversy has intensified further after a video surfaced online showing Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir mocking detained activists inside a prison facility, triggering outrage in several European countries. Some European leaders are now reportedly discussing possible sanctions against the Israeli minister.
The incident has once again placed the Gaza conflict and Israel’s handling of international activists under the global spotlight. With investigations beginning in multiple countries and testimonies continuing to emerge, the story is rapidly becoming one of the most politically sensitive international human rights controversies of the year.
