A fresh political and environmental storm has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed that more than six lakh trees could be cut down for an Adani Group-linked coal mining project in the Singrauli region.
The issue has quickly turned into a high-profile battle between industrial development and environmental protection, drawing attention from activists, politicians, and legal experts across the country.
According to Jairam Ramesh, the project involves a large forest area spread across nearly 7,000 acres — land that was once reportedly considered a “No-Go” zone for mining because of its dense forests and important elephant corridors. The Congress leader alleged that the mining operations could severely damage the fragile ecosystem and wildlife habitat of the region.
The project is linked to Mahan Energen Ltd, a subsidiary of the Adani Group, which received environmental clearance from the Union Environment Ministry in May 2025 for coal mining activities in the area.
The controversy intensified after the Supreme Court recently declined to interfere with the environmental clearance granted to the project. The case had been brought forward by environmental activist Ajay Dubey, who challenged the approval and raised concerns over ecological damage and deforestation.
However, the apex court observed that the petition faced legal limitations regarding delay in filing. While the court did not cancel the clearance, it allowed petitioners to explore other legal remedies, leaving the possibility of future legal battles open.
Jairam Ramesh has now urged the judiciary to examine the matter with urgency and sensitivity, especially considering the environmental implications. He pointed to recent strong judicial observations in other environmental cases and expressed hope that ecological concerns would not be ignored.
The debate has once again sparked a larger national question — how should India balance rapid industrial growth with the protection of forests, wildlife, and local ecosystems?
As political reactions intensify and environmental groups continue to raise alarms, the Singrauli coal mining project is rapidly becoming one of the most closely watched environmental controversies in the country.
