Anthropic Bets Big on India, Appoints Sangeeta Bavi to Lead Startup Growth
Bengaluru: Global AI powerhouse Anthropic has made a major move to strengthen its presence in India’s booming AI ecosystem by appointing tech industry veteran Sangeeta Bavi to lead startups and growth initiatives in the country. The appointment signals Anthropic’s aggressive push to expand the adoption of its AI platform, Claude, among Indian startups and digital-native businesses.
Sangeeta Bavi, who previously held leadership roles at Microsoft, Nokia, and startup media platform YourStory, will now head Digital Natives, Startups, and Growth Sales for Anthropic in India. Industry experts see this as a strategic hire at a time when global AI firms are racing to capture India’s rapidly growing AI market.
In a LinkedIn post announcing her new role, Bavi described India as being at an “extraordinary inflection point” where startups are not just using AI but actively building businesses around it. She also highlighted Anthropic’s focus on creating AI systems that are “safe and beneficial for humanity.”
Before joining Anthropic, Bavi spent nearly a decade at Microsoft, where she played a key role in scaling startup-focused cloud and AI initiatives across India and South Asia. She also worked on expanding Azure OpenAI adoption among startups and enterprises. Her experience in working closely with founders and emerging tech companies is expected to play a crucial role in Anthropic’s India strategy.
The move comes at a time when India is becoming one of the world’s hottest AI battlegrounds. Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and other global AI players are rapidly expanding their teams, partnerships, and developer ecosystems in the country. Analysts believe India’s huge startup base and rising AI adoption make it one of the most important future markets for generative AI.
